Bruising is a common concern for dermal filler treatments. While you can’t completely avoid it, there are ways to reduce the chances of bruising. Below are the steps to minimize bruising after dermal fillers.
1. Stop Blood Thinners
Before your treatment, stop taking any blood thinners. Blood thinners include:
Aspirin
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve)
Vitamin E, garlic, ginkgo biloba, turmeric, fish oil
Stop these supplements at least one week before your appointment. If you’re on prescription blood thinners, consult with your doctor before making any changes.
2. No Alcohol
Alcohol is a vasodilator which means it widens the blood vessels and can increase the risk of bruising. To minimize this risk, don’t drink alcohol for at least 24 hours before and after your treatment. This will help keep your blood vessels stable during the injection process.
3. Take Arnica
Arnica montana is a natural remedy that helps reduce bruising and swelling. Taking arnica in pill form or applying arnica gel to the treatment area before and after the procedure can help minimize bruising. Start taking arnica 4-5 days before your appointment and continue for a few days after.
4. Ice Packs Before and After Treatment
Using ice packs or cold compresses on the areas where you’ll be injected can constrict blood vessels and reduce blood flow which minimizes bruising. Applying ice for 10-15 minutes before the procedure can also numb the area and reduce discomfort from the needles.
After treatment, apply ice packs intermittently for several hours to minimize swelling and bruising.
5. No Strenuous Exercise
Vigorous exercise increases heart rate and blood circulation which can worsen bruising at the injection sites. Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours after your dermal filler treatment. Instead, do light activities that doesn’t increase your heart rate much.
6. Elevate Your Head After Treatment
For about 4 hours after treatment, try to elevate your head using multiple pillows while resting or sitting in a reclined position. This will help reduce swelling and allow any potential bruising to settle more evenly without pooling in one area.
7. Don’t Touch or Massage the Area
After dermal fillers, don’t touch or massage the treated areas for at least 6 hours after injection. Touching the area can disturb the filler placement and increase bruising.
Follow these steps before and after your dermal filler treatment to minimize bruising and maximize results.
